Maintenance and Repair

Acoustic Corner now offers maintenance and repair of most stringed instruments, including fretted and violin family instruments, as well as electrics and pickup installation.

John Logue

We are pleased to announce that John Logue is now our full-time primary instrument technician. Originally from Chicago, via Nashville, John has been playing music and working on instruments in western North Carolina since 1998. In his own repair shop in nearby Swannanoa, John worked on a variety of instruments for many local musicians, instrument collectors and all-around music lovers. John moved his shop to Acoustic Corner in 2004, and can be reached there between 10 am and 3 pm, or by appointment.

Steph and Toby

Seen here with shop dog Toby, Acoustic Corner co-owner Stephanie Wilds serves as our primary violin technician. Stephanie's expertise focuses on violin setup and maintenance, with some minor repair available, and she especially enjoys working on student-level violins. Under the supervision of husband Tom Fellenbaum, she has also been learning the art of pearl and abalone inlay, and offers a limited amount of custom inlay and repair.

Joe Salvatore

Joe Salvatore has returned to the Acoustic Corner staff after a creative hiatus in Arizona. Trained as a guitar technician, Joe specializes in stringed instrument care, maintenance, and set-up. As an active musician, promoter, and sound engineer in the Asheville area, Joe helps to cater to the ever-growing needs of professional and novice musicians alike, bringing an experience-based knowledge of sound enforcement and instrument care to our staff.

Instruction

Acoustic Corner is pleased to provide private, one-on-one space for instruction in a variety of instruments. Our future expansion plans include a group lesson room as well. Our instructors come from a range of musical backgrounds, and most are professional musicians. The roster of instructors is ever-growing; call for additional information or referrals for other area instructors.

Matt of Acoustic Corner

Matt Kinne is our primary guitar instructor. He studied jazz and classical guitar in college while earning his degree in anthropology. He's been playing the guitar for over twenty years, and has been a guitar instructor for twelve. An accomplished performer in his own right, Matt plays regularly in several venues in the Asheville area, and is an amazingly versatile musician, moving seamlessly between folk, jazz, classical, celtic, and rock and roll. Matt divides his time at Acoustic Corner between teaching and staffing our showroom.

Andy Pond

Andy Pond has been picking the 5-string banjo since 1992. Andy was the first banjo player in Appalachian State's Music School, where he earned a degree in Music Industry Studies and pursued music theory and jazz studies as well. Andy enjoys teaching banjo to students of all levels in a wide range of styles including traditional bluegrass and jazz. In addition to teaching, Andy plays professionally with many bands in the Western North Carolina region, and tours up and down the East Coast with CX-1.

Les Dotson

Les Dotson, originally from Alabama, has been an active performer and teacher for thirty-seven years. Born into a musical family and exposed to traditional southern and Appalachian music, Les has naturally carried on the tradition; he began playing music at age six and teaching at eighteen. He has been an artist-in-residence for the Virginia Commission for the Arts and an independent scholar of southern folklore and music. Les's instruments of choice are the guitar and banjo. He teaches Irish (DADGAD) guitar, blues and slide guitar, and clawhammer banjo.

Paco Shipp

Paco Shipp is our harmonica instructor. Using the knowledge from years on the road and in the studio, the classes range from beginner to professional and are tailored to the individual student. You can learn more about Paco at his website pacoshipp.com.

David Zoll

David Zoll has been playing guitar and performing in New York and Florida since 1991. He plays an eclectic blend of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Country and Bluegrass. An avid performer and student of the instrument, David focuses on fingerstyle, songwriting and improvisation. Since 2001 he has taken interest in instruction, building a modest following by adjusting each lesson to fit the uniqueness of each student. He enjoys dividing his time between teaching, performing and working the showroom at Acoustic Corner.

Laurie Fisher

Laurie Fisher is a multi-instrumentalist and one of the southern 'players' in the contradance renaissance of the past 20 years. Her high-energy fiddling and dance calling have been enjoyed by dancers in the southeast and beyond for 15 years. She is fiddler with the String Beings, Holy Coyote, Ants in the Pantry and pianist with the Evil Twins. She plays music from the contra, old time, Irish and Scottish repertoire and is a 2nd violinist in the Blue Ridge Civic Orchestra and Jubilee Summer Orchestra. Laurie teaches all levels of fiddle, beginning/intermediate guitar, clawhammer banjo, and beginning voice, also fiddle for violinists. Expect fun, patient and effective teaching with emphasis on ear-training and inspiration. Visit Laurie's website for more.

Natalya Weinstein

Natalya Weinstein is an accomplished multi-genre fiddler and violinist who trained for 15 years as a classical violinist before switching her focus to bluegrass, country, swing, and old-time fiddling. She has been teaching for 10 years and has resided in Asheville for the past 3, performing with a number of local and regional bands, doing session work, and teaching students of all ages. While she focuses on fiddle repertoire with her students, Natalya teaches from a classical perspective. After students gain a level of comfort on the instrument, she encourages them to study whatever fiddle style they're most interested in.
